I went to work but the power is off so I am back home now. No damage at work or home so was extremely lucky. Some parts like the CBD are badly damaged and other areas suffered liquefaction where water comes up through the ground like quicksand. Others have lost chimneys, glassware TVs etc. Main concern is power , water and sewage. Also luckily it is a nice fine day today. We have had a lot of aftershocks up to 4 and 5 on the Richter scale.

Christchurch has had more than 21 aftershocks of 4 or more on the Richter scale. Even now I can see my TV and mirror shake every few minutes. They are still warning us that a second big aftershock of about 6 could happen anytime. My flat has been undamaged but a lot of older brick buildings have been badly damaged. Most of Christchurch now has power but water and sewage are the major problems still. The fault has moved about 3 meters horizontally and very shallow which has caused the most damage.

I've heard the sad news yesterday evening on CNN and it's a headline in todays news here, too - obviously a relief for Hayley that she was able to contact her family and that all at home are ok.
All the Best from Germany to all affected by this earthquake,
Karsten

This is very worrying. The latest news is that nobody has been killed, but many older buildings have been destroyed or badly damaged, as the photograph shows. My thoughts are with everybody in Christchurch.

Richard Thanks Richard & everyone for your kind wishes.Wow what a quake I was awake about five mins before the quake struck and the effect was like an express train travelling a good speed and then having to stop rather quickly, and then started swaying. Damage was minimal just some glassware fell from a top shelf in the kitchen and my CD's scattered over the floor. So I got away with it surprising with little damage at all to speak of. Unlike other mem of my family who were almost totally written off as far as property goes, like most places caused by the collapse of chimney's and most of which fell through the roof, all were uninjured which is a blessing. For those of you that are following this event this site is worth a visit:- www.tvnz.co.nz One network news were on air from Christchurch pretty well all day up until 1930hrs (7.30pm) and they are on air with updates every hour. All bus services were suspended basically until further notice, which means I have a Sunday off I don't normally get as the city bus exchange is right in the problem spots in the CBD. A devastating situation in anyone's language but we will bounce back believe it.Thanks for reading this and your thoughts and prayers, cheers all, Rodders

Hi everyone,
I've been reading the news reports on this. In a way it was a blessing that it happened so early -- it meant that people weren't out and about on the roads and I think that may have helped keep the injuries lower.
I hope that everyone in Christchurch can get back to 'business as usual' as soon as possible.

I was really shocked to learn of this tragedy particularly since I have never associated New Zealand with earthquakes.
My thoughts are also with the families of those killed in the nearby air crash.

Martin Thanks Martin, yes, NZ is well and truly associated with earthquakes make no mistake about that.I did read on the website somewhere where NZ gets a jolt from an earthquake somewhere in the pacific region. Some of them go unnoticed as they are very small but I read that there is something like 14,000 jolts during a 24 hour period, this is considered quite normal, but by hokey you wouldn't want what we had yesterday as a daily “Jolt” there would be nothing still standing i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif. cheers all, Rodders.

In some parts of the world the threat of earthquakes is something people live with all the time. And just about anywhere on the Pacific rim qualifies. People still live in San Francisco, overdue for a major earthquake, and in reality NZ is no different , although we don't often think of it like that. It is something that we in the UK find hard to imagine.
The fact that there were no deaths and only a couple of serious injuries is a testament to how well we have learned to deal with it. It is about engineering and we are getting better at it. We can't cope with it well on the roads though, so it is a blessing that this one was in the middle of the night when the roads were mostly empty.
My sympathies and prayers are with all that were and are affected by this. It has been suggested that very few families will be unaffected.

Hi All, I'm thoroughly aware of NZ sitting on a fault line so www.gns.cri.nz/kids/volcanoes/plate_boundary.htmlit's not a great surprise to find a quake near Chch....very distressing tho for the occupants of the buildings affected. I noticed that Port Lytellton had little damage in the town but a lot of the wharves were damaged. The Port Lytellton - Chch road goes straight thru a dead volcano but the volcano is still dead it seems. Graeme

This one comes from a german newspaper: The number of steel supports for shop awnings ripped out of their supporting brick walls is incredible. Graeme

Hi all,
Belinda has made contact and she and her family are well.
My thoughts and prayers go out to the people of Christchurch and the South Island for a swift clean-up and recovery.
