[quote author=stevemacdonald board=offtopic2 thread=4831 post=99421 time=1248972037 I really don't mean to sound picky, but... The use of a pick also limits the player as well, because only the pick is 'picking' the strings, whereas using fingers means that you are actually connecting to the instrument, meaning that more feel and emotion can be achieved. ...
Let me pick up on this, as I have a bone to pick with you here.
Fingerstyle playing and using a plectrum are comparable in achieving emotional expression. It all depends on the level of skill of the musician. I'd say take your pick. It's nothing to fret about, but "connecting to the instrument" is done the moment you pick the guitar up and feel its weight in your hands.
Hi Steve
The point I was trying to get across was that a lot more emotion can be expressed through the use of fingers, compared to just using a pick, on unamplified guitars. Also, most guitar players have some degree of finger - picking ability. I was also trying to get across the point that if the guitarist who played the nylon strung guitar parts on some of Hayley's tracks tried taking a leaf from a classical guitarists' book, in terms of finger picking style and technique, then an even higher quality of tone could be achieved.
Cheers
Ben

Hi Ben When recording her albums, Hayley uses a number of session guitarists and all by definition are professional musicians. For example on Treasure she uses four different guitarists. So, I am somewhat perplexed that you are suggesting that one or more of these guitarists need to get a decent guitar and have a few lessons. The guitarist on "One Fine Day" happens to be Des Moore who is acknowledged as Ireland's foremost session and orchestral guitarist and plays most fretted instruments in a variety of styles. I think he might be a bit put out by your comments if he was aware! So, I think you may well be alone in your opinion. Martin

I am not in any way trying to say that they are bad guitarists! I suppose I am being too harsh and hearing things from a classical guitarists' point of view - silly me! I was merely making an analysis of the tone that the nylon guitars were achieving! I am again not saying they are bad guitarists - exactly the opposite - I'm in awe that they get to play on Hayley's albums! I seem to have dug myself a hole here - sorry people - my opinions are running away with me! i've deleted the original post I made on this matter, as I dont want to start anything - or maybe I already have...... Hi Ben No need to delete your post really. We respect peoples' views here on the forum (providing they are within the guidelines) but if you put forward forthright comments then you have to expect forthright responses! On a similar theme, I enjoy classical guitar and recently attended a fantastic concert by a 25 yr old Danish guitarist who was ex. Royal College of Music where he gained a 1st. Martin

Well I guess I agree with Ben on the fingerstyle/pick argument... you can do everything using your fingers, plus more. Although I guess hardcore electric solos would be very difficult without a pick! I'd say take your pick. It's nothing to fret about Those puns' were intentional weren't they?!

By the way, one of the nicest things about Hayley's Pure album is the guitar work in the songs "Heaven" and "Who Painted The Moon Black?". The playing is nothing less than utterly superb! The only thing better, instrumentally speaking, is the exquisite cello part in "Dido's Lament".

Hi Ben I believe it was Johan Löfving who incidentally is Swedish and not Danish as I thought. Martin Thanks Martin I'l look him up - if you're interested in classical guitarists, i think you should try listening to a Greek guitarist named Antigoni Goni - she is amazing - she was taught by John Mills, who learnt with John Williams and Julian Bream, and he is incidentally the Head of the guitar department at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama! Cheers Ben

Hey all, Auckland, New Zealand is currently being assessed on whether or not to bid for the hosting of the Commonwealth Games in 2018...which is a very long time away, but they have to put the bid in by the start of next year. You can read more HEREI personally hope that we do host it. Not only because I would love to see something like that here (we have hosted it 3 times in the games history, but I was 2 years old the last time), but also because it would be the perfect opportunity for Hayley to headline (the ceremonies)!! If Auckland does win the bid, we should all send letters to the organising committee over the years, giving them friendly reminders of Hayley's worldwide achievements - though I'm sure we wont need to remind them i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif. I hope Hayley has more headlining opportunities like Taiwan in the coming years! Cheers Jono

Hey Ben...wow I just looked up Antigoni Goni on U tube hey...wow she is aawesome hey....love it........taaaa heaps sandyxxx Hi Sandy Antigoni has released several CD's on the Naxos label if your interested in hearing more. Personally the best CD's to buy are from the 'Laureate Series', where she plays a selection of relatively unknown pieces, but by quite famous composers. The actual disc doesnt have a title, but the CD cover has the composers 'Rodrigo, Domeniconi, Mompou, Barrios, Brouwer' printed in large fonts. Also, her CD of John Duarte's guitar music is one of my favourites from my whole collection! What I especially love about her playing is the tone and depth that she achieves! Cheers! Ben

I just bought 2 CDs off trademe...together costing $4 (the price of a semi-expensive coffee), plus $2 postage.. That's brand new BTW..
Anyway, one of them is called "Bravo!" - 18 Opera Classics From The Greatest Voices of our Time
And it has HW - "Across The Universe of Time" on it...not sure how that counts as opera...actually much of the CD isn't opera by any stretch of the imagination... It has a wide range of artists such as Il Divo, Russell Watson, Pavarotti, Charlotte Church, Sarah Brightman, Yulia...etc..
Just wondering if any other collectors out there have this one? Or do you all steer clear of the compilation albums?

Hi Jono I seldom buy the sort of compilations you mention as I don't generally like most of the other artists on them. However, I recently made an exception with an album entitled "Arias". It is a promo CD from Thailand and I was intrigued by the fact that it had Hayley's "Walking In The Air" on it, although the image shown was from 'Odyssey'. It is an unusual album in that it has tracks going back to 1973 ("And I Love You So" by Nana Mouskouri) but also up to date tracks (All Angels "Angels"). I will post a few pics later. What puzzles me now though is that I cannot find this album anywhere, although it is recognised by Windows Media Player! Best wishes Grant
