Pure is released in the US on Tuesday this week but the relevant Billboard chart isn't published until the middle of next week. The highest I've seen it on Amazon so far has been 278. In next week's UK charts, watch out for the excellent Katherine Jenkins, whose debut album "Premiere" is out this week and is likely to displace Hayley from the top of the classical charts - hopefully for only a few weeks! Last but not least, from unofficial reports I've seen, Amazing Grace has now sold over 91,000 in Japan and is rapidly approaching its Gold Award (100,000 shipments). Pure has sold over 83,000 there, so it's not far behind. Awards are announced on the 12th of each month so we should hear firm news on this in the middle of this month, or in May. It is rare for "foreign" artistes to achieve Gold awards in the Japanese singles market. Fingers crossed.

Amazing Grace hits GOLD. What a birthday present! My Japanese contact has just told me this:
"According to the newest Oricon chart (April 12, 2004), the total sales of A.G. [Amazing Grace] has reached 100,475 copies."
The Oricon chart is the "official" one based on actual retail sales, and publishes total and cumulative sales weekly, for the biggest selling singles. My contact's information has always been accurate to date, in so far as I have been able to cross-check it. Thanks to mario!
It is still at number 1 in the International singles chart and last week went up again to 24 in the overall singles chart - way ahead of all other foreign artistes. The official announcement should take place on the 12th April or possibly, if it just missed 100K shipped at the end of March, one month later. I hope this information can soon be verified by Decca!

[Comments]Pure was released in the US on Tuesday last week but the relevant Billboard chart isn't published until Wednesday/Thursday this week. The highest I've seen it on Amazon so far has been 36. Amazing Grace has now sold over 100,000 in Japan and will qualify for its Gold Award (should be announced on the 12th April or 10th May) In a separate development, Hayley has won two awards at the annual "Japanese Gold Disk Grand Prix" ceremony, held on the 10th March 2004. "Amazing Grace" is the Overseas Song of the Year and "Pure" is the Overseas Classical Album of the Year. This means that Amazing Grace was the best selling single of the last year, by ANY overseas performer(s) - pop or classical. Pure was the best selling classical album by any overseas performer(s). The information is from Hayley's official website in Japan and the official RIAJ website. Finally, congratulations to Katherine Jenkins, who ably supported Hayley in her recent UK tour. Her debut album "Premiere" has entered the UK POP charts at number 31 and raced to the top of the Classical chart, Katherine and Hayley now have the top two positions there!

Pure fails to enter the Billboard 200 in its first week on sale Almost unbelieveably, Pure has failed to enter the Billboard top 200 albums in its first week of release. Six days sales would have been counted, from Tuesday 6th to Sunday 11th April. Billboard has said the number 200 album sold 7,000 copies last week, so Pure has either sold less than that or was disqualified for a technical reason (unlikely). It does however make some sense, remembering Steve's (I think) comment that late last week the local Barnes & Noble store had sold zero copies of Pure.
But I think there is hope. Lots of it. Last weekend, Pure was around the one hundred mark on Amazon sales rank and was out of the Barnes & Noble daily top 100. Today, Pure was ranked 13 at Amazon and 9 at Barnes & Noble. This of course is after Hayley's appearances on GMA and Fox & Friends and some advertising, too. I guess that last week, the American public simply hadn't heard of Hayley!
I think Pure is set for a spectacular entrance into the Billboard 200 next week and I will post the chart position and hopefully sales, too, at 11am Eastern (4pm BST) next Wednesday. This week's shock may have worn off by then

I'm sure that the holiday had something to do with it. I work in a mail-order clothing company. Our sales between this and last week were very low. Most shops generally are not busy or have even been shut last week. I'm sure that Hayley was #201 or something. Next week I'm sure she'll be at least in the top 100. Thanks for the update, Dave.

Billboard has a subscription-only chart for Classical Crossover albums. I'm sure Hayley will rise to the top of that before long.
Up until recently there was nothing to drive sales of the US release except word of mouth. For it to take off she'll need more of a media bandwagon.

Yep, Hayley needs a bandwagon! I have the other details now, there is some good news Pure entered the Billboard Classical Crossover chart at number 2 (I bet Josh Groban is top - he'll take some shifting !!!). It also entered the Heatseekers chart (for artists who've never been inside the Top 100) at 13. Roll on next week

Pure finally makes the Billboard 200 albums!Pure has debuted in the Billboard 200 at number 70 in the chart to be published tomorrow, with 13,000 copies sold last week. Billboard News says (today): "Other notable entries include the Maverick soundtrack to "Kill Bill Vol. 2," which lands at No. 58 on sales of 17,000 copies; New Zealand teenager Hayley Westenra's debut "Pure" (Decca) at No. 70 (13,000 copies); and guitar whiz Joe Satriani's "Is There Love in Space" (Sony), docking at No. 80 (12,000 copies). Not as high as I had hoped - steady progress, though. The US is obviously harder to break into for "foreign" debut artists than some of us out here had thought - we'll just have to give it plenty of time!

As I understand it, Pure was at number 241 last week and at number 70 this week. That's a jump of 171 places in one week. Now I calls that darn good going, myself. i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifKeith.

Yes, it's all relative, I suppose. I'd hoped for something closer to Charlotte Church in her debut week - number 28. So no record breaking - not yet. But Charlotte slipped down after that and I think Hayley will climb. Hayley is, however, now upto all-time 3rd place for debut Classical Crossover (CX) artists, since the CX chart started in 1990. Josh Groban's debut peaked at 8 in the Billboard 200, in 2002, Charlotte Church's debut peaked at 28 in 1999, Hayley is already at 70; Sarah Brightman peaked at 71 in 1998 and Russell Watson peaked at 90 in 2001. A handful of *classical* recordings have done better, however - notably the "Benedictine Monks Of Santo Domingo De Silos" who peaked at number 3 in the Billboard 200 with their debut album Chant, in 1994 So I, too, calls that darn good going
