I'm used to being the odd one out! But that sentence seems to suggest that I do not support Hayley. Just because I don't think she has emotion in her voice, it doesn't mean I don't like her, as I have already said, for one thing I don't like, there are a hundred things that I do like about Hayley.

Hello Nicola,
I did not in any way mean to suggest that you do not support Hayley, far from it, I was just saying that I and many others here may not agree with you on your statement that "Hayley's voice lacks emotion on all of her albums so far"

I look forward to reading your views on the 'positive' aspects of Hayley's voice in the future.
Sorry again if I did not explain myself clearly on my earlier response to your post.

I guess we really do hear things differently! I wonder if I am at times biased (when it comes to Sarah), but I have never known myself to be. I don't fall in love with an artist and let every flaw fly over me as if it doesn't exist, if anything, I pay closer attention and pick out more. I listened to them both again more carefully with what I hoped was a clean slate, and I still found Hayley's version dreadful (mainly because of the arranagement, NOT her voice). She sounds lovely, but I still didn't detect anything in there whilst I detected plenty in Sarah's version. But then, she did record it for the stage! Irrelevant though, as the both of them are completely different! But to refer to what somebody said earlier, I agree that most of the time, the more someone is trained, the more emotion they lose. To use Sarah again, she had such emotion in the 80's and early 90's (e.g. the song 'Meadowlark'), but after vigorous training she came back, in 97' with 'technical' performances. These days I tend to find emotion in her musical arrangement rather than her voice (her production team, Nemo Studios, are EXCELLENT). Katherine Jenkins, Becky Jane Taylor and Charlotte Church, all emotive performers in my book, are all very young and whilst have had a lot of training, not nearly enough as the elders. Keedie, who has been trained for about 10 years is the most emotive of them all, so I think she is quite an exception. When it comes to Hayley, as I said before, her selling point is not the emotion, but the purity of her voice. Okay, so she doesn't sing emotively like Yulia Townsend, but she has something none of these singers have and that's the clarity and purity. She is a honestly distinct and special vocal performer. Considering that the emotive performance is very important to me, and the fact that I still like Hayley, attend her concerts, buy her CDs, and come on this forum, says a lot for me; she clearly has that special oomph that more than makes up for what she lacks in my point of view when the other artists wouldn't even be in my radar if it wasn't for the fact they could move me in performance.

I'm used to being the odd one out! Me too! And all because I prefer Odyssey to Pure! ...it doesn't mean I don't like her, as I have already said, for one thing I don't like, there are a hundred things that I do like about Hayley. And there, Nicola, you may have planted the seeds for a new thread altogether.... I wonder if anyone would like to start it? Cheers, Dave

Hi Nicola As you intimate, everyone interprets music and its rendition in different ways. I for one do not want to go on an emotional rollercoaster every time I listen to a song whether it is one of Hayley's or not. It is more important to me to be left with a sense of enjoyment and satisfaction than to be emotionally drained. Hayley always achieves this in my mind.
On Odyssey for example I think there is emotion shown on several tracks, "Prayer" and "May It Be" being a couple of examples. But admittedly, there are also a couple of tracks which were not best suited to Hayley and the performance reflects this.
I would be the first to agree that some songs require emotion from the performer to be delivered successfully but I think the real measure is whether or not the listener is able to engage with the song. Again, Hayley rarely fails me here.
Stuart is right when he says that you will not get many supporters in the forum but also honest views and frankness coupled with constructive criticism has to be good?
Happy New Year Martin

Hey, You two are too fast! Okay, as long as you don't actually expect me to list 100 things I like about Hayley!

Sorry Martin, let me be more precise, I like an artist to deliver emotion where appropriate. Not every song requires this. For my taste, singers should not deliver a sedated performance when it's a song that clearly suggests emotion to be put into it. 'May It Be' in my opinion, is her most emotive recorded song. Agreed, there. And you are all really too fast!

Hey, You two are too fast! Okay, as long as you don't actually expect me to list 100 things I like about Hayley! Hi Nicola, No, not at all! Thread starters can put the question and start the ball rolling... then sit back all comfy to see what the reaction is! Speedy

It could be a task, though couldn't it? Start a thread with ONE nice thing about Hayley, and each poster adds one more with each post until we reach 100... that could even be fun. Every thread I start though, seems to die. I think if someone else started it, it might work, but not with me!
