That's a shame Hayley won't be able to make it. One wonders though, as there is one member of the Westenra family not a million miles away, if a certain other young lady might collect it on her sisters behalf? Well, all I can say is "Congratulations Grant"! Yes, the award will indeed be accepted on Hayley's behalf by Sophie. Gerald told me this morning that Sophie is to delay her return to New Zealand by one day so that she can come to London on Friday to attend the black tie dinner and collect the award. Roger Hi Roger That was a pure guess on my part although it seemed a very logical option. I'm sure Hayley will be delighted that Sophie will be able to collect the award on her behalf and it will also be a little showcase for Sophie which has got to be good. I presume someone from Bedlam will accompany her. Best wishes Grant

I presume someone from Bedlam will accompany her. ... If so, who would pay them? I'm assuming nobody works for free.

Hi Steve,
It certainly doesn't have to be someone from Bedlam, there are several other possibilities I can think of. But if it is, well we have no idea what financial arrangements are in place and probably, we never will so [edit] it's a bit pointless to speculate about it - let's stop.

Hi Steve As you know Bedlam has a long association with not only Hayley but also her family. So from a friendship viewpoint I am sure that Steve Abbot would offer some form of accompaniment for Sophie if asked and I am sure that reimbursement would be out of the question. Martin

In keeping with the theme of "Kiwi Young Achievers" maybe Sophie could go all by herself. Or since she's quite the chess player, she'd could pay Abbo his fee saying, "Here's your check, mate!"

Hi Steve I wasn't actually thinking about the monetary aspect, but simply of a young lady of 17attending a very important and formal dinner. I could not imagine anyone, particularly Hayley, wanting her to be there on her own. Best wishes Grant

Hello everybody! I'll be very surprised if Sophie doesn't have an escort on Friday. I hope we'll find some reports from the event in the press. Best Wishes, Richard

I am so glad that Sophie will be accepting the award. I would have been so upset for someone to have missed that. Poor Hayley! She never makes to accepting these lovely awards. Will this be broadcasted on television?

Haha... good chess humour... This is all nice and all but I would love it if Sophie herself got such an award one of these days Perhaps Hayley could pick hers up then i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifIn keeping with the theme of "Kiwi Young Achievers" maybe Sophie could go all by herself. Hi everyone Many congratulations Hayley for this wonderful achievement - you richly deserve it. Also, congratulations on the sale of 4 million albums worldwide ( I think thats a very good guess - the press have been reporting 3 million for a good while now). I'm also so pleased that Sophie will be at the award ceremony on Hayley's behalf (good guess Grant). Lets hope there are some press articles and even some pictures of the event Very best wishes Mark

Oh Lady, very well done indeed! One feels so proud to have latched on to you in those early days when you were still 'being found'... and I was one of the later ones! Peter S.

According to the NZ society, all the winners will be attending the annual Waitangi Day Dinner on Friday February 8, 2008 in London. However, Hayley has a concert in New Zealand on the 9th so somehow I doubt she will be able to make it. More information about this ceremony here. Stephany I wonder if being a Kiwi is a must? If it is an expanding event and by ticket purchase it sounds like a Pom might not be unwelcome? Peter S.

That is one great deal for Sophie. A plane diversion from Germany for an impressive dinner then on back home. That will be one great adventure that will really give her experience and confidence for what ever she does in the future. Good on you Sophie. That also answers a query I asked elsewhere the other day, will Sophie be back in NZ in time to see her sister perform? Clearly she will. Peter S..

Seeing that they're serving lamb and venison at this ceremony, I doubt that vegetarian Hayley is missing much by staying away except some nasty meat fumes that would likely gag. Oh I don't know. I'm not a venison person myself. I was brought up on NZ lamb though and while Hayley can always stick to a vegetarian diet I think she will eat meat occasionally. I'm sure I read somewhere she does, she's not totally against just prefers not, I think? The ambiance of a place like that together with familiar Kiwi things and the aroma of good cooking will overcome all. With a good meal inside her Sophie will not only enjoy herself but give a very confident rendition of what ever prize collection and 'thank you' speech are required. Probably a paragraph from Hayley herself to help her. Well done Grant for being so 'with it' as to guess so intuitively. Peter S.

Isn't that sort of meal, that sort of venue, meeting that sort of people reward enough? In any case: - in her autobiography she says what wonderful folk they are at Bedlam, no nine-to-fivers just dedicated to what is needed to support their performers.
- In any case it is a promotional and very public exposure (wonder if BBC will cover it or a film at least for NZ people or the BBC acting on behalf of NZ TV?) so Hayley would probably have someone with her anyway, they would merely be supporting Sophie instead.
- Were Hayley/Sophie not available then someone from Bedlam would have to stand in anyway.
