 Safe Haven for Eliminated songs
« Thread Started on Dec 31, 2006, 4:08am »

Like it or not, many wonderful Hayley songs are biting the dust in our "HWI's 'Best Of' by elimination!" thread. For example, I just shot down her stunningly beautiful (though done-to-death) "Amazing Grace", nasty boy that I am.

Some of these songs are simply too obscure to survive an elimination like this, and, predictably, they're being picked off one-by-one. Others are getting off'd for reasons of individual taste, and that's also to be expected, if not encouraged, by this exercise.

Now, to clear my conscience a bit and to inject a little overdue mercy, I'm creating a "Safe Haven for Eliminated Songs" -- a list made up entirely of songs killed off in the elimination thread. No, we can't bring them back to life, but we sure can give them a proper burial!

Please add any songs that deserve a place on the "Safe Haven" list.

I'll go first:

1. Here Beside Me (from Mulan II) -- this is my FAVORITE soundtrack song of all time! I may never fully recover from its untimely elimination.

2. Dido's Lament -- arguably one of her top 5 songs ever. Killing it off was a travesty of justice.

Talking of travesty's, someone bumped off 'Benedictus'. Oh, I'm not saying who!

3. Benedictus - One of the few compositions Hayley has taken and arranged it in a completely different way. And it was written by Karl Jenkins. And it's just the best piece ever. Ever.

Shame on you, Steve. Shame!

4. Wuthering Heights -- This was obviously a polarizing song. You either loved it or hated it. But you gotta love Hayley even more for taking that risk. When she performs it live it's always the showstopper. Few songs deserve to be on the best-of list more than this.

But nothing "deserves" to be on the 'best of' list! It's fairly obvious that songs like WH will be bumped off, as will every single polarizing song on the list.

In the main thread, we will be left with all the "OK" and well known songs that displease nobody but that everyone can easily remember. :-/

But in this "Safe Haven" thread we will end up with songs so diverse that the resulting album would be a mishmash and would sell in smaller numbers than the main "best of" album.

Such is life... but it's only a game. [image]

Hayley's so tolerant, it could be a chimpanzee at London Zoo cuddling her, but see signature

Well said Steve BUT: if its been nominated for rejection, is it rejected, or if howls of protest emerge can it be re-instated? [image]
As Roger said, it's all in fun and I can't reject anything--I'm an awful magpie in everything in life, or do i mean jackdaw? [image]

7. Laudate Dominum -- Clearly, this was also Hayley at her most sublime. Any 'Best of' list without it appears fraudulent.

I agree.

But who cares? If they don't like it, you can't make them like it.

Yes, it does seem rather watered-down at this point.

If history's any judge, it's typically a composer's more "controversial" works that stand the test of time. Yesterday's crowd-pleasers are today's biggest yawns. Hayley's legacy will be better served by songs that riled her fans one way or another.

8. Both Sides Now -- No "serious" best-of list would exclude this masterpiece, so I'll make a comfy place for it on this side now.

I was just saying that if someone doesn't like a song you can't force them to like it.

I was in a funny mood when I wrote that sorry.

I do agree though, Benedictus is Holy sublime.

I wouldn't be too sure about that! Like Wuthering Heights, I think there are quite a few Hayley fans who would not place BSN among Hayley's top 15 or 20 songs (though the video is stunning). These things are so personal.

I've now decided to stick with the original "Best of" album tracks, even though some of my favourites were eliminated. I hope it sells a million! :D
