Whose idea was it to shorten the original "Classical" to "Classic"? The word "classic" is often used sarcastically so it feels weird to apply it to a music award.

And don't forget Josh Groban from the US, and Andrea Bocelli from Italy. :) And David Garrett from Germany.

Yes I know. But a trip to London is only justifed in my opinion if it is to see Hayley. So I will wait until I know she will be there before I book anything.

Hi Steve

I think that stems from the fact that musical theatre is now going to be included in the awards. They had a performance of excerpts from "Les Miserables" last year. Perhaps the organisers think "classical" is too elitist and want to appeal to a wider audience? I don't think "classic" is used in any derogatory way in the UK?

cheers

Tony

Hi Tony and Steve
You are correct Tony.

Formerly known as the Classical Brit Awards, the event - organised by the British Phonographic Industry - was renamed the Classic Brit Awards last year.

It was first run in 2000 to recognise the achievements of classical musicians and the growth of classical music sales in the UK, but the BPI has now introduced a musical theatre category, in a bid to attract a bigger audience to the ITV1 show.

In my book this is called "dumbing down" ! :(

Here in the states it's often used as a one word epithet (always with an exclamation point) in response to something felt to be wrongheaded. As in: "... a bid to attract a bigger audience to the ITV1 show" — to which I would respond "Classic!" to indicate my resignation with this predictable dumbing down of the awards.

Hayley herself has been described as "more classic than classical" so I guess it's not all that dumb that they renamed it, but only if she wins. [image]

Hello folks! [image]

There's still no news about the nominations or the performers in this year's Classic Brit Awards. I'm watching this site for further information, but so far there's no sign of the promised announcement:

Thanks for the update. :)

Any idea when the launch might be? September? Isn't it normally a month before the actual show, at least when it's in the spring?

October, apparently. I assume it will be late this year because of the Olympics tying everything up in the UK.

Bit weird they don't seem to have any of the performers confirmed enough to announce yet, though. It's not THAT far off...

Be a crime against music if Hayley doesn't get a ton of nominations at the very least for Paradiso.

Well, the awards are the 2nd, so unless the launch is the day before, it's not going to be in October! ;)

And others have already said it was postponed due to the Queen's Jubilee festivities, although the Olympics could have something to do with it too... but I doubt it. Summer isn't usually an awards season, that I'm aware of. People are too busy... being unbusy. ;) Except for those of us working retail. ::)

Yeah, I was wondering what was new about it. LOL

I was hoping for some update on the artists to perform, and the nominees, and all that. I suppose it's a little early, though.

Well, I'm at least curious as to when the CBA launch will be, or if there will be one. I seem to remember that in the past, at least when Hayley went, the launch was in April, so about a month before the awards show itself. So, that makes me think the launch must be in September.
