Hi Bill. I hate that when u go somewhere and theres no internet hey or u cant get a reception ..grrrrr hey…ummmm no not a career hey just a hobbie…..my 2 greatest passions ….astronomy and art sorta go hand in hand because the cosmos are incredibly beautiful even if it is incredibly violent….a lot of my art involves backgrounds that ive made from various pics of our awesome universe hey…..as for my knowledge hey ..lol….im a member of various astronomy forums and a lot of people think im an egg head on the subject but in the forums im the dumb kid on the block hey….I start talking about the complexities of parallel dimensions or the significance of red shift to determine the speed of galaxies hey and they start quoting astronomical equations relevant to what im talking about hey…its like hello…1 and 1 is 2 here …in astrophysics 1 and 1 make 8 equals C….…..duhhhh … hey….who let the blond in here, did she forget to turn on the inertia dampeners before she hit light speed hey… …….but I do enjoy it heaps big time tho hey . These two posts have been moved from the Black Barn thread: Graeme,
I looked up chaffinch, and it appears to be mainly a European species.
We do have other finches, though. Washington's state bird is the Gold Finch. Very pretty birds!
Oh yeah, in Australia I'll want to see the wild budgies. That would be something to see (and hear, too), I imagine. It'd be like seeing my own birdy multiplied a thousand times. Yes Libby. The Chaffinch is European but the 1st NZ Brit settlers must have brought some with them. I was surprised to see the chaffinch & didn't know it was one until I inspected my pics after coming back to Aust. in feb. 2008.
There are NO Chaffinches in Australia....or none have survived.
In Christchurch there were lots of European Blackbirds & Thrushes & probably Chaffinches....the ones I saw were in the North Island.
We have quite a few little flocks of Goldfinches where I live in Lake Illawarra district Libby. Lovely little birds.
As for budgies, the wild ones are green coloured & they're found hundreds of kms inland. We were recently inland in a place called Echuca but I saw no budgies at all. Lots of parrots of different types like: Sulphur Crested Cockatoo; Galah; Corella; Superb Parrot. But no budgies. When you come across budgies in the wild they're in enormous flocks numbering in the thousands. This one is a female.

Michal Back in the mid twentieth century when I was matriculating at the university I had the misfortune of taking two statistics courses. ( Pre calculator days). I made it through them; but i would have opened a vein if I would have had to take another one Larry
