Thanks again Libby. That settles all the arguments.

The booklet is actually incorrect here. The above are Joan's lyrics and are correct for the first two verses. Thereafter, Hayley makes a subtle change for the rest as below

Here's to you, Nicola and Bart
Rest forever within our hearts
The last and final moment is yours
That agony is your triumph

Best wishes

What does "dono" mean, happy? That's the word you were missing.
Hi Libby,

I think the last line is "As a final gift" but it can be refined of course.

As Grant says there are a few discrepancies/errors in the booklet lyrics, perhaps because Hayley departed slightly from the official versions, but they are certainly very helpful. :D

And they let us down completely with Lezione - 0% correct as they didn't bother! I'm having to slow down the track to one third speed to get them! :o

Thanks for posting your set, it will be a useful check for us all. ;)

Cheers, Dave

8-) Many thanks for these lyrics, Libby.

And if anyone has an ipod or ipod touch, you can place the lyrics for each song into each track (under Get Info). They will appear on the screen you!

Hi Libby,

Thanks for doing that and it was 'dono' I was missing and I totally agree that 'like a final gift' is a good translation, makes more sense!

I have one question about Amalia Por Amor. If it's "Amar" in the lyrics, why is it "Amor" in the title? Is this accurate, Paulo?

Hi Libby,

Yes, it's accurate, in the title "Amália Por Amor" - Amor (Love - noun), in the lyrics "Amália por amar" - amar (to love - verb), in the original version sung by Dulce Pontes the title and lyrics are exactly the same as Hayley's version!

Best wishes,

Hi Libby,

Yes, the Amálias are there, the funny thing is that I only realized this when I heard Hayley's version, in Dulce Pontes's version the effect is so subtle that at first I didn't realized she was singing the word Amália ::).

Thanks, Grant. Although I did listen to all the songs as I was working on this, I have to admit I didn't pay very close attention to Here's to You that I didn't even think to add the different part. I was mindlessly singing along, as I so often do, but by that time, I was already working on Malena! Now that I think of it, I always know exactly when she's going to say which part at the right times, going by the rhythm change, but I guess typing a different song while listening to another doesn't work! Although I did manage to type up Malena quite accurately, all the same! ;D

Maybe if a moderator could add that part, like in parentheses, or with an asterisk, that would be helpful. And also the "final gift" part in Cinema, if you don't mind? [image]

Oh, and as I mentioned in the Japanese version thread, there's a slight error in La Califfa (which of course I fixed). The booklet says "Your heart is blind to the things that I see", when Hayley actually says "to ALL that I see". It certainly flows better, and sounds better poetically.

Hi Libby, I corrected your Italian a bit (using è etc) and changed the translation slightly. Thank you for sharing. happy

Profumo Di Limoni
C’è un profumo di limoni al mio paese,
Sospeso in aria e nella via,
Ti avvolge fino a che
Come un respiro e una magia non ti
Abbandonerà, sempre più.

Nella luce (nel tepore) di una sera in primavera
Io me ne sono andata via
Portando dentro me
L’incanto di una storia che non è finita mai,
Sempre tu, amore.

Quel profumo e solamente casa mia
Che mi accarezza e spazza via
Insieme all’allegria, il canto della gioventù che
Non mi lascia più,
Come ultimo dono
~~~
Scent of Lemon
There’s the scent of lemon in my village,
Suspended in the air and in the street,
It envelops you until
Like a breath and a magic
It won’t abandon you, ever more.
In light (in the warmth) of a spring evening
I went away from there,
Taking within me,
The enchantment of a story that has never ended,
Always you, love.
That scent alone is my home,
Which caresses me and sweeps me away,
Along with the joy, the song of youth,
Which doesn’t leave me anymore,
As a last gift.
Hi Happy,
Thanks for the translation, I translated it originally in order to prcatice my Italian (I've been learning for 3 years as part of my degree and I usually have to read history books). Your translation is really good, I'm not used to translating poems/lyrics!
Hello everyone,
With the assistance of Joe and Grant (who provided the lyrics set in the Japanese booklet), I have just completed updating the lyrics page on the HWI website that I added about a week ago. It was until now accessible only through the "Recent Posts" link in the Navigation menu on the left, but I have now added a link to it from the Discography page, and below.
Joe's idea was to post all the lyrics and where necessary, their English translations side by side in table format - so that's what we've done, and is partly why it's taken a while to get it done. The translations can of course be improved upon but I have not yet acted on any of tonight's 'translation' posts, it's too late here. Thanks all who have helped and are helping to get the translations right! :D
Feel free to point out any errors either in the original lyrics or in the translations - in particular I am concerned about the third line from the end of track 10, Da Quel Sorriso Che Non Ride Più, where Hayley appears to sing an additional word after "Non cera" and which could change the meaning of the line. It is not in the official lyrics so please help with this! There are of course a few other omissions and errors in the booklet, just a few.
Libby many thanks for the work you've done too in this thread, we should probably compare the two lyrics sets at some point - and yes, one of us will update yours with the amendments you have requested (but its too late for me tonight). I will do that and add links to both our lyrics sets on Saturday, in post #2 at the start of this thread - but for now I'm off to bed! [image] [image] [image] [image]
Paradiso Lyrics on HWI website
Cheers, Dave
Edit, I will add the lyricists' names and do a few other things over the weekend.
I probably wouldn't have enough patience to listen to 7 minutes just for the last few lines. At that point, I probably would be doing something else, and not paying attention to the words. I do like the song more than I did at first... but it's still just kind of a "listen while doing other things" song. And then that's while listening to the entire album. Not one I'd get out the CD especially to hear. I do sometimes skip to the next song before it finishes, just because it's so long. If it wasn't so long, I probably wouldn't skip it.
But now that's going off-topic a bit. ;D
Oh, and thanks for the new translation, Happy! :)
I didn't notice a translation of the Italian lyrics in La Calliffa. I found some translations for Sarah Brightman's rendition which had another verse in the middle that Hayley's doesn't have. I put the "extra" lyrics in there, just so you can see what it's about more. I merged the different translations a little to make them sound better (to me). Happy, you can correct me wherever you see fit. ;)
Tu non credere perche
Questa crudelta di padroni
Ha visto in me
Solo una cagna che
Mi mett’ anch’
Io alla tua catena
(Se attraverso la città
Questa ipocrita, tua città
Il corpo mio
Che passa tra di voi
E' un invettiva contro la viltà
)
Tu ritroverai con me
La piu splendida proprieta
Un attimo di sole sopra noi
Alla ricerca di te
You do not believe, because
The owners' cruelty
Has seen in me
Only a dog,
That I tie myself
To your chain.
(When I cross the city,
This, your hypocritical city,
My body
Which passes amidst you all
Is a cry of anger against cowardice
)
With me you will find once more
That most splendid possession,
A moment of sunshine over us,
In search of you.
So now I'm wondering how Hayley's lyrics tie into the rest of the song. The first verse is hard to figure out, already.
Hi Libby,
I don't for a moment expect that Hayley's English lyrics are supposed to be any sort of translation of, or bear any relationship to, the Italian ones.
Hayley, I understand was given a free hand to write her own lyrics to this beaufiful melody, and that is exactly what she did. I love both the English and Italian parts of this song. Both are beautiful, and both have their own special charm I think.
Perhaps I should put in a plug here for Hayley Online's lyrics page at http://hayleyonline.net/index.php?page=k&key=Lyrics . This has lyrics to most of Hayley's recorded songs, and Libby was commissioned to add the Paradiso ones too, which she has yet to do. (She may have worked on some of the others too, or it might have been Matt - not sure about that.) She tried them out here first, so we are privileged. But I'm sure they will appear on Hayley Online in due course.
So thank you Libby for doing this for us.
Hi Libby,
I have made the amendmemts that you requested to your Here's to You lyrics and your Cinema Paradiso translation. Let me know if you would like anything else updating.
I have also put a link to your lyrics set, and the HWI lyrics set, in the first and second posts of this thread to make them easier to find.
There is now a link on the HWI Paradiso lyrics page to to your own lyrics set here in the forum.
