I did a quick tour of the CD stores in town today.

W H Smith have her at number 11. She is #6 in MVC and (up from 20 to) 15 in Sainsburys who still didn't have any at lunchtime but there were three there this evening

You mean three people returned their copies??? :o [image]

Just to add my one store visit, Tescos have Odyssey at number 17 this week (from 9). Most CDs experience a fall-off in sales in their second week so I guess most stores expect Odyssey to drop out of the top 10. Pure didn't drop but its massive publicity won't be happening this time so Sainsburys/Tescos probably have it about right, anything better is a bonus. But after this week, we need it to stabilise!

Cheers, Dave

This from Virgin.net
Jazz star Jamie Cullum entered at number four with 'Catching Tales' while Hayley Westenra's 'Odyssey' entered at number 10.

However, it was a disappointing week for both Sean Paul and The Corrs with their new albums failing to make the top 10 - entering at 11 and 14 respectively. [image] )

Oh, disappointing for them was it? Well the Radio 1 and Radio 2 chart shows still managed to play one of their album or singles tracks (both in Sean Paul's case!!!) in full, while almost totally ignoring Hayley. Actually, it was worse on Radio 1, they managed to insult her: "coffee table music for your mum" is what the guy said. Grrr!!! I'll wring his neck! [image] ;D ;)

It ain't a level playing field, folks... :'(

Hello everybody! [image]

I see HMV have "Odyssey" down at No.30 in their chart, but there are plenty of copies available in London.

I was very disappointed Radio 2 didn't play anything from "Odyssey" on the chart show last night, especially as they regularly played tracks from "Pure" two years ago! [image]

I don't usually listen to Radio 1, and I never will now! :P

Bye for now,

Richard 8-)

The chart shows nowadays have turned into complete and utter rubbish, hardly any different from any other radio show where the presenter plays whatever he wants.

I noticed that on both chart shows, half of it was taken up with "pre-releases" and interviews with selected singers/bands. All these are picked by the producer/presenter - and what they pick helps to determine what gets into next week and next month's charts. When they do chart, they play them again. [image]

Another chunk is taken up by inane chatter and general music news.... with a smattering of insults thrown at artists they don't like (Hayley sings "coffee table music for mum"... Katie Melua's music is "weird").

This leaves less than half an hour to play the entire top 20 albums - or 15 minutes on the Radio 1 chart show. The producer/presenters then pick a handful of new tracks they like from the new entries and ignore anything they don't like, unless of course it's number 1. Wrong!!! Radio 1 didn't even play a Katie Melua album track in full when they did the album chart - they faded it out very early..

When airplay and even what's played from the album chart are decided on the whim of some blinkered presenter and his producer, what chance is there for real talent to be heard and to compete?

Has Hayley (with the 24th best selling UK album of 2003 and the 10th best selling album of last week) EVER been on the Radio 2 playlist? She certainly hasn't this time, so far. With a few exceptions, the standard of UK mainstream radio has in my opinion gone rapidly downhill over the last few years and it stinks.
[/rant over]

However... the BBC Radio Wales album chart show is on this evening. I shall listen to that - they will undoubtedly play Hayley. The Welsh *do* know good music when they hear it! :D

Thanks for that Dave. It is all very annoying and rather sad. All the more reason why it was essential that Odyssey qualifies for the classical charts.

The Amazon UK chart is very interesting at the moment - a few hours before the release of Bryn Terfel's Simple Gifts - and a few hours after Bryn's "Faenol Festival" was featured on the very popular "Songs of Praise" TV show. In spite of a surge up the Amazon chart today by hayley - from 40 to 18 - Bryn is hot on her heels. Aaaah, if only Hayley could get on Songs of Praise again... or anything!!!! :o

Amazon UK Hot 100 - 20:30 GMT 9th October 2005

18. Hayley - Odyssey
19. Bryn - Simple Gifts

There's nothing like a bit of good healthy competition - remember, "Bryn" actually charted one place HIGHER than "Pure" in the week when Pure reached its UK peak on the pop album chart, and it beat Hayley for Album of the Year. Add to that the "Songs of Praise" effect and Bryn may well get ahead of Hayley in the charts next week. :o

The next few weeks in the UK will see the Great Battle of the Classical Crossovers... Hayley vs. Bryn. vs Katherine and even, possibly, Aled Jones for a week or two!

At last!!! US Odyssey is going up the Amazon.com charts:

Odyssey
Today: #969 in Music
Yesterday: #1,889 in Music

First time I've seen it in the top 1,000 :D - but still a LONG way to go :o

Here's a full update on the "Amazons" and also, some official UK midweek information (Sunday + Monday).

In the US, Odyssey is still in the 900s at Amazon, on the morning of its release there. Some PR is needed quick! :o

At UK Amazon, Odyssey dropped below no. 50 on Sunday but then some deft TV advertisng by Decca pushed it up to around 30th by Monday and today, its no. 44. Keep at it, Decca, until Hayley gets back and starts "doing things" over here!

So how's Hayley doing compared to Bryn and Aled's new albums? Here are today's UK Amazon positions:

Aled - ranked 26 (2nd day after release)
Bryn - ranked 37 (2nd week after release)
Hayley - rank 44. (4th week after release)

Considering the length of time since their release dates, Hayley is clearly doing the best - so far (Hayley was higher than both of them in her second week).

How reliable a guide is Amazon? Well, here are today's official midweek positions (based on Sunday + Monday's sales):

Bryn - no. 24
Aled - no. 25
Hayley --- 34 (4 places and 8% less sales than last week at this time).

Also (in the midweeks)

Charlotte Church - 33 (hangin' in there!)
Jamie Cullum------ 36 (big drop!!!) :o

So Amazon isn't a bad guide at all, if you average it over a day or two and look at the trend. It includes compilations and prereleases so it tends to place artist albums already released lower than they should be. I conclude from all this that:

- Sunday evening's TV advertising boosted Odyssey's sales from what they would have been (they probably increased on Monday, on its own).

- Odyssey is doing better than Bryn and Aled, considering that it's been out 2 to 3 weeks longer

- In the absence of any further TV and radio appearances by Hayley for a while, TV advertising can be used to stop the slide and keep Odyssey in the charts - if Decca are willing to spend the money.

I think Decca will be doing more TV advertising because they know - as well as we do - that if they can keep it in the charts and on supermarket shelves for another month, it will see a large increase in sales for Christmas. Get yer wallet out, Decca!!! ;D

As for the Supermarkets & Multiples (this is where most Hayley albums are sold in the UK), Tesco and Woolworths have dropped Odyssey to around no. 45 so hopefully, they will now think that's too low and will push it up their charts again next week. The others don't yet seem to have updated this week.

Phew! I'm out of breath now, after all that talking!!! [image]

Thank you Dave. I don't know that albums are sold in the supermarkets of UK. I think Tesco and Woolworths are big supermarkets that sells many different kinds of products, right?

Cheers,
Raymond

Hi Raymond, yes they are getting bigger every year and now sell not only food but CDs & DVDs, many also sell clothing, electrical equipment, bikes... you name it!!! The biggest UK Supermarkets are Tesco, Asda/Walmart, Sainsburys. Woolworths is a "Multiple" (chain of general stores) who sell everything except (usually) food. The big Supermarkets are often out of town but the "Multiples" like Woolworths are usually in town centres.

My nearby Tesco Extra store now sells the top 120 Artist CDs and the top 60 compilations (soon to be 100 I think). :o

How high has Odyssey gone on the main chart? The highest I saw was in the 270s, and that has started falling. I'm worried :-/. It's doing better in the classical (#11), opera/vocal(#10), and braodway/vocalist (#48) charts, however.

Also, I notice the five star reviews getting a lot of not-helpful votes (which basicaly means 'I disagree').

I'm going to have to phone in to some radio stations and request Hayley's music. If more people knew about it, Odyssey would be somewhere in the top 10 for sure.

Hi someone!

I haven't seen Odyssey above no. 200 in the main Amazon.com chart so I think its 273 at the moment is not far off the highest it's been. I noticed the 5 star "disagree" votes too but I also noticed that most of votes 'disagreed' with the worst review, 3 stars. It looks to me like like someone ;) or some people has been playing with Amazon to disagree with everything!

It's not only the US where most people haven't heard of Hayley, most people everywhere still haven't heard of her either! Take a look at the Il Divo forum and do a search for "Hayley" over the last 7 days, she is hot news there at the moment as she will be supporting them on their 2006 World Tour - it's amazing how many people haven't heard of her - and she's already had TWO top ten hits in the UK!

Lack of airplay and TV appearances is the biggest problem - even in the UK. Two weeks promotion in the US won't make a lot of difference I'm afraid so every email and phone call to radio stations will help... I hope yours will be the ones to finally make them realise what they are missing! :D

I will have the first official US chart positions for Odyssey late on Wednesday or possibly Thursday and I will post as soon as I find out. Fingers crossed!!!

Cheers, Dave

UK Amazon: Odyssey is currently back above both Bryn Terfel and Aled Jones' new albums at Amazon UK (classical and main charts). :D

It's amazing what four minutes of BBC Breakfast TV exposure can do - even though at Amazon UK, Odyssey now costs £13.99!!! :o

Odyssey is currently ranked 255 at Amazon.Canada, this is much higher than it was until a few days ago. For comparison, it is currently ranked no. 771 at Amazon.com (US) where it's high in the official crossover chart.

I think this improvement on Canada is due to the recent showing of "Women in Music" on Bravo Canada as mentioned in this thread. I think we can expect to see Odyssey back in the official Canadian classical chart later this week. ;)
