 Morwen's singing
« Thread Started on Aug 8, 2012, 9:34am »

http://karaokescene.com/ss/song.php?id=91541. This is a recording of me singing a short piece from The Desert Song called "My Little Castagnette". And it's short, only about 1 hour and 19 minutes long. I recorded it in GarageBand. The character who sings this is Clementina, who sings "The Song Of The Brass Key."

Any comments on my singing?
And also, here's another one: http://karaokescene.com/ss/song.php?id=91545. The Song Of The Brass Key.

Very nice effort...a colorful voice. I would like to hear more confidence and projection in your upper register.

Kind of funny that you say it's rich, that's definitely not something I've heard before. Most people I know say it's pure.

Sparrow's "Jean and Dinah" acapella.
(And yes, I want to be a tent calypsonian! Who occasionally sings other styles, like CC. But I'll mainly do calypso.)

Unfortunately, I forgot the last verse. I think my next number will be "Babalu."

Here are the lyrics:

Jean and Dinah (Yankees Gone)
Mighty Sparrow 1956

Well, the girls in town feeling bad,
There's no more Yankees in Trinidad,
They going to close down the base for good,
Them girls have to make it how they could,
Brother, now you see them park up in town,
In for a penny and in for a pound,
Believe me, is competition for so,
Trouble in the town when the price drop low.

So when you bounce up

Chorus:

Jean and Dinah,
Rosita and Clementina,
Round the corner posin',
Bet your life is somethin' they sellin',
And if you catch 'em broken,
You can get 'em all for nothin, '
Don't make no row,
The Yankee gone and Sparrow take over now.

Things bad if you hear them cry,
Not a sailor in town, the nightclubs dry,
Only West Indians like me or you,
Go in to get a drink or two,
And as we have things back in control,
I seekin' revenge with me heart and soul,
Brother when I spread the news around,
Is to see how them cavemen come into town.

Just to meet with

(Chorus)

When the Yankee was in full swing,
Just imagine how I was suffering,
Mavis tell me straight to me face,
She find I too fast and out of place.
No, no, no, they will start to fret,
Money or not poor Sparrow can't get,
With the Yankees they have it cool,
Calypsonians too hard to fool.

So when you bounce up

(Chorus)

It's the glamour boys again,
We are going to rule in Port-of-Spain,
No more Yankees to spoil the fete,
Dorothy have to take what she get,
All of them who used to make style,
They takin' two shillin' with a smile,
No more hotel to rest your head,
By the sweat of thy brow thou shalt eat bread.

So when you bounce up

(Chorus)

I loved this! I followed along to the lyrics, and can almost picture a steel drummer and a maracas player on stage with you!

Thanks very much,
