Hey, Elliot, Nathan Gunn is performing with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir this year. I'll be interested in watching him sing on TV, but they won't show it till next year. That's the downside if Hayley ever sings with them. Their shows are always aired a year later. :-/ I might have to travel to Utah to see her if she ever gets to do it! But the plus side is that they make a CD and DVD of every Christmas show, so we would all be able to buy a CD and DVD with Hayley performing with the MTC! Wouldn't that be exciting? And am I going way off topic now? Sorry Richard. ;)

I've moved your post to this thread and added a partial quote from Elliot's post in the Royal Variety Performance thread. :)

Libby,

Nathan's performances are never all that easy to find, unfortunately. I don't really understand why he isn't a lot more popular and well known. On the bright side, there is YouTube :)

Hello Libby and Elliot! [image]

Here's a concert review from The Salt Lake Tribune:

Quote:
Review: Mormon Tabernacle Choir shares a fairy-tale Christmas

By Catherine Reese Newton
The Salt Lake Tribune
First published Dec 16 2011 10:20PM
Updated Dec 16, 2011 11:05PM

The LDS Conference Center stage was decked out like Sleeping Beauty’s castle for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir’s Christmas concert on Friday — befitting this year’s guests, an opera star whose credits include a high-profile staging of “Camelot” and a beloved actor who shares her name with an ill-fated British queen.

“Once upon a time is now, and ‘our happily ever after’ will come at the end of a Christmas story that only we can tell,” narrator Jane Seymour proclaimed during the evening’s opening processional as dancers in Renaissance garb glided down the aisles.

Seymour and baritone Nathan Gunn were as charming and professional a pair of guests as the choir has ever presented, connecting with the crowd in a next-door-neighborly way even as they pulled off their roles with consummate polish. Gunn’s “world’s coolest dad” demeanor belied the power and flexibility of his voice on music as diverse as the old German carol “In dulci jubilo,” the aria “Mighty Lord and King All Glorious” from Bach’s Christmas Oratorio and a wintry medley of “Winter Wonderland,” “White Christmas” and “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!” The choir gave solid support and also shone on its own in numbers including the jubilant “Domine fili unigenite” from the Poulenc Gloria.

Every Tabernacle Choir Christmas concert includes an inspirational “story behind the carol.” This year, Seymour shared the story of “Good King Wenceslas” as the choir sang a fine arrangement of the familiar carol by its music director, Mack Wilberg, behind her.

Other highlights included Gunn’s sensitive performance with the choir on a lovely Wilberg arrangement of “Silent Night” and organist Richard Elliott’s annual mashup of carols.

The concert repeats tonight. It’s officially sold out, but don’t let that stop you; there were several empty seats on Friday.

Hello again Libby! [image]

I think you'll like this video of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir singing "It Came Upon The Midnight Clear" to the tune 'Carol':

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1J_WjVG1DTM

Compare that version to this one by Kings College Choir, Cambridge to the tune 'Noel', arranged by Sir Arthur Sullivan:

Happy Christmas! :D

Well, this year we get to watch David Archuletta (American Idol) with Michael York narrating. I really hope they invite Hayley next year and she's able to do it. I don't know how much longer I can wait to see her on! ;D I really would love to see the show live, but I don't know how that would work, since I'd have to fly, and this is the worst time of year to fly. But I would just have to be prepared to be stranded I guess. [image]

Hello Libby! [image]

Here's another Christmas treat from the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

For Unto Us A Child Is Born: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1a0mp0eoLhw

That is definitely my favourite piece from Handel's Messiah. :D

Yes, I like that song. It's one I would love to hear Hayley sing, if she ever records another Christmas CD.

I watched the show on PBS last night, and David Archuletta sang very nicely, but they only showed him singing 4 songs, one of which is the MTC's usual Angels from the Realms of Glory as the last song. However, going by the website's description of the DVD and CD (also on Blu-ray), David sang 2 other songs, as well.
The reason I'm interested in the number of songs he sang is that I'm concerned about how many songs Hayley would get to sing, or be shown singing on TV, if she does ever get to do it. Since they replied to my letter saying she is "definitely in our future plans", I am fully expecting them to have her on one of these years! ;)

If I could only choose 3 songs for Hayley to be shown singing... ooh, that's hard. I really like Love Came Down at Christmas. They always seem to include different or less-often-sung Christmas songs in their shows, so I think that would be a good one, even though it's not on Hayley's album (which I'm sure people would want to buy, after hearing her performance). Veni Veni Emmanuel would be a must. Hayley's version of it is stunning. Then, I think it's a toss-up for the 3rd song. If they would allow her to sing original songs, I would vote for Peace Shall Come. Otherwise, maybe Silent Night, Little Drummer Boy, Coventry Carol, or Little Road to Bethlehem. Oh yeah, Coventry Carol would be perfect, because the choir would sound good backing her up, even though it's a children's choir who does it on Hayley's CD. Any of the songs would be worth showing on TV, though, and whatever they don't show would still be on the DVD. :)

Oh, and besides being on TV and being on their DVD/CD, the artists and actors all get a nice write-up about their successful careers on the website! :)

And here's a quote from the MTC's website, just as an example of why I'm so set on Hayley doing this:

"The program is what PBS calls 'the perfect holiday perennial to deliver the spirit of the season for the entire family. This special has the energy of a rock concert.'

Every year the Choir’s Christmas concert is broadcast nationally on PBS to rave reviews
."

:)

I've now discovered that the two videos I posted were recorded in the LDS Church Conference Center in Salt Lake City, not the Salt Lake Tabernacle. Here's an article about the organ in the Conference Center:

You can hear the organ in this video:

Hi Libby,

I absolutely agree with your choice of songs for Hayley. I would pick the same ones. I even used two of them in the midnight service I led on Christmas Eve, although "Love Came Down" was sung to a different tune.

But one carol I love, and another one I used on Christmas Eve is "Of the Father's Love Begotten". I can't help feeling that ancient hymn (4th century) would be a real spine chiller if Hayley sang it.

And yes, Hayley with the MTC would be fantastic I'm sure.

Yes, it's especially fun with the dancers. I think Hayley would enjoy the experience very much.
Bedlam thought it sounded great, too. ;) Still working on trying to convince Bandana. No response from them yet, but I still hope they at least read my letter and are considering it! But with Bedlam, I just e-mailed and they responded that way. I think I may have e-mailed Bandana, too, but since they didn't respond that way, I decided to send a "real" letter, too, to make sure they don't miss it. If they ever read their mail, that is. :-/

I wonder if they know who you are Libby. I would certainly hope so. But doesn't the initiative have to come from the MTC rather than Hayley's management. I would think they would need to invite her. And then she would need to feel comfortable about it.

You may be right. But as I mentioned above, after I wrote to the MTC themselves last year, they replied saying that Hayley is definitely in their future plans! :D So, I think that helps a lot. And when I wrote to both Bedlam and Bandana, I told them what they said. I think this will help her management be more likely to say yes, anyway. ;)

The fact that the MTC music directors are already interested in having her on is a start, at least. I just thought it wouldn't hurt to get the idea into the managements' minds, as well. I made sure to give them an idea of what these concerts are like, to help them see why it would be a great opportunity for Hayley in the US. If the MTC ever does get around to inviting Hayley, Bandana will hopefully (if they bothered to read my letter) already have the idea in mind as something to possibly arrange for Hayley in the near future. :)

I have no idea how early the MTC begins negotiating these things, but it's possible that they might have tried to get Hayley this year, but she already had the Taiwan concerts just around the time they filmed their concerts. I kind of doubt it, but it is possible! And, if that really had happened, and Bandana thinks it's a good idea, then maybe they would be more likely to keep next December open for such things!
Oh, well, I just hope it's not 5 years till it happens. The sooner the better, because 2 years is already hard to wait for to see Hayley on TV, because that's the earliest we could hope for that. :-/
