Hayley sings "Listen to the Wind", the final song of the soundtrack to the movie entitled "The New World" which opened Christmas Day in the USA and will open Jan. 27th in the UK. The movie is based on the Pohocontas story. A comment from Dan Goldwasser of Soundtrack.net ..."While the song, "Listen to the Wind", does not appear in the film at all (thus rendering it ineligible for Oscar consideration), it is sung nicely by Hayley Westenra, and makes a nice companion piece to that other famous Pocahontas song, "The Colors of the Wind" from the Disney animated film, Pocahontas." The soundtrack, according to amazon.com, will be released on January 24th.

Hi Joe, I think this song was recorded during Hayley's Odyssey tour. I remembered reading some news that Hayley was not able to go to Taiwan to promote Odyssey because she needed to record a movie theme song at that time.

Check out the movie trailer at: www.thenewworldmovie.com/I think you can hear part of the song about 30sec into the clip. Not 100% positive it's the song but it does sound like Hayley's voice. Somehow it reminds me of Sissel's song in the Titanic soundtrack. It has James Horner written all over it Allen

Hi all,
Good memory, Raymond! Hayley had to dash off to the USA in record the song. Here's an excerpt from channelnewsasia.com as reported on September 6th:
[Young New Zealand soprano Hayley Westenra claims she only realised how famous she’d become when she received a phone call from big shot Hollywood composer James Horner last month.
Oscar winner Horner has composed music scores for several major blockbusters including A Beautiful Mind and Titanic. Westenra said that she was “absolutely ecstatic” when she got the call.
“It was definitely one of the high points of my life,” said the 18-year old at The Oriental hotel on Saturday night, shortly before she performed a private showcase in Bukit Batok (in Singapore). Westenra spent a few days in Los Angeles laying down vocals for Horner’s main theme song for an upcoming film, rumoured to be the new Terrence Malick opus The New World, which stars Colin Farrell.]
Thanks for the link to the movie's site, Allen! True, can't say for certain if that is Hayley's voice.

Hello everybody! I must thank Sarika from Hayley's official forum for pointing out that you can hear Hayley singing "Listen To The Wind" in full on the movie's web site at www.thenewworldmovie.com/Click on "Features" then "The New World Score" and you can listen to Hayley's song and all the other tracks. Hayley's voice is beautiful, and all the music is very relaxing, so I will definitely be buying the soundtrack CD. i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifBest Wishes from London, Richard

The song is very nice, and Hayley sings it very well! I don't understand though. The song doesn't even appear as the credits go up on the screen? Then why is it part of the soundtrack? Doesn't seem to make any sense.

Doesn't seem to make any sense. Hi Natasha! As mentioned by Joe, all is revealed here and I think the following longer extract sums it up nicely - although I would explain it in TWO words: "stupid producers" who, apparently, do this sort of thing quite regularly. "Composer James Horner wrote about four hour of score, with much of it replaced in the film with the prelude to Wagner's "Das Rheingold", and the slow movement of Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23. What does remain of Horner's music works quite well, providing an emotional backbone to the character of Pocahontas.
The soundtrack album contains a lot of music not used in the final film, and it's certainly not because of the quality... While the song, "Listen to the Wind", does not appear in the film at all (thus rendering it ineligible for Oscar consideration), it is sung nicely by Haley Westenra, and makes a nice companion piece to that other famous Pocahontas song, "The Colors of the Wind" from the Disney animated film, Pocahontas." Hayley's "Listen to the Wind" is listed by the above mentioned Soundtrack.net as one of the top 5 Soundtrack songs of 2005 "Composer James Horner teamed up with Polar Express lyricist Glenn Ballard to pen this unused end title song, performed by Haley Westenra. Using the theme from his score, Horner's melody grows on you the more you listen to it." What a pity it isn't in the film - but it's nice to know that it's thought of highly. It will be interesting to see what Hayley does with it (Bridal Ballad soon appeared on Hayley's albums). Cheers, Dave

Hi all, If you're having problem playing the track on their website, you can "stream" it via Winamp by entering the following url: www.thenewworldmovie.com/mp3/track_13.mp3Not everyone has flash plug-in installed right? Thanks Richard for the heads up. Hayley's voice is beautiful in Listen to the Wind. Wonder if James Horner wrote the song with Hayley in mind, it sounds so perfect I must have played it at least 20 times since I read your post. People in the house are going to think I'm crazy i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifHopefully the movie does well in box office and Hayley gets to shoot a music video for the DVD Allen

Hello Allen! There is a rather weird situation with "Listen To The Wind". I believe the song is going to be on the soundtrack CD, but it has been omitted from the soundtrack of the film. My advice to Hayley's fans would be to buy the CD but forget about the DVD, unless you really want to see the film. Very strange! Richard

Thanks for that link Allen, nice detective work. Now I have it, I see they are at *cough* kbps. Assuming the availability of all these tracks is deliberate on their part., it's an interesting policy and I hope it works for them by increasing box office sales. There will be some disappointed people though, if they go to see the movie after listening to the sound track , when they discover that Hayley and a lot of the other soundtrack tracks aren't in it. Even though I know *what* was done, I agree with the other comments that it's a very strange policy. Quite weird, in fact. Dave

Hello Allen, Dave and everybody! If Hayley filmed a video of "Listen To The Wind" it could make a lovely bonus feature for the DVD of the film. Then the DVD would be worth buying! I'll be surprised if it happens, but you never know! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifBye for now, Richard

Hi Dave and Richard, The full length *cough* samples policy may actually work. I remember they used to have full length samples ("cd quality" too) on Josh Groban's site for his debut album. I didn't really know who he was back then, he only came into my attention with the track he recorded with The Corrs. Guess the marketing worked somehow Still a chance for "Listen to the Wind" to appear on the Director's Cut verision of the DVD i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif I can visualize it being used at the very last scene with a fly-over some forrest and fade into the credit... It reminds me of of the song "The Dream Within" from the Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within movie. Allen

Hayley could do very well out of this. If you record an end title for James Horner, and it gets good reviews (so far so good) people - including some in the industry - will sit up and take notice, even if it isn't in the final movie release. Not all of Horner's score has been left out of New World and people who buy the soundtrack will soon come to associate Hayley's song with scenes from it.. Everyone remembers Horner's 'Titanic' score (the biggest instrumental soundtrack seller of all time) so his name alone should ensure good sales for the New World soundtrack - and good exposure for Hayley. She is starting to find a nice little niche for herself now in film theme songs and I suspect this will continue. It is only a matter of time before Hayley gets a smash hit out of one of these theme songs... only a matter of time, I feel it in my bones! Dave
